Las Vegas boasts replicas or interpretations of historical architecture.
Nashville Tennessee, USA, also proudly displays a full size replica of the Parthenon in Athens, Greece.
Current building activity in China may lead to more copies of great buildings.
Does this bring great architecture closer to a wider audience or is it blatant plagiarism? What are the ethics of copying someone elses designs?

I beleive that making use of famous designs by master architects can only be a good thing. I don't see the problem, after all architecture never rises from nothing it is usually inspired from and created through observation of designs thought and created by other architects. the whole idea of rivavalism movements was exactly that. modern unconventional designs are also rooted in the past even if they are extensivly modified and reinterpreted "ie louvre pyramid". As for the cathedral Its a work of a master simply magnificent.thanks again for posting it

thanks for the link! I think it's absurd to try to divorce great buildings from their site... and sad. Great design does not get better because it has a wider audience. Better to commission a mediocre, but sincere, work of architecture made for its site then to duplicate a masterpiece..
they sure did a nice job though... |

. . .because they obviously did such a good job with the replication. It's kind of spooky. I'll leave the arugments regading context to others, though having been to Ronchamp personally, I could make a decent one.
But here's another subject for a pontential diatribe. How is this replication (despite it's being a pure facsimile) better or worse than what Philip Johnson did when he imported Mies vocabulary to the East with his "Glass House" which is hailed as a highly original and seminal work of American architecture. To a large extent, I perceive this replication as not being all that different from his.
O.K. - Have at it. . . |
