I should have known it would be a wiki entry. Smile

I hope McMansions are the bottom of the hole in american architecture and we don't fall any further. Across the board dumming down of the building trades.

Untrained architects designing for unskilled contractors selling to ignorant owners.... and on top of it, using the poorest of building materials and techniques to build the largest volumn of garbage on our planet. There's only sawdust to salvage from McMansions and maybe a sink or two.

I wonder what the half-life of the glues used to bond McMansions together is? Can it be predicted when entire subdivisions of McMansions will come to disrepair?

Water leaking from a fake gable roof. I can't imagine the repair cost, cause I would just burn it.

A nice cozy thousand year old timberframe on the lake, that I can imagine.

Rembmer the boss is the OWNER, you build what the client wants.

If the owner wants a McMansion then you design it.

If the owner wants a in-ground home then you design it.

But keep in mind this is a typical sized home in country area, just looks bigger due to the "extra" high roof, that was damanded by the owners wife (the boss of the boss Smile )

This roof design was an issue during constrcution and extra costs to suit and was even considered to be removed, but the boss of the boss insisted....and now with it complete must say the boss of the boss was correct it makes the house grand.

"The Little Mary" house is Grand without the McMansion size and more importantly the McMansion costs Smile

Good luck,
Sven

I don't think madimel was criting it for it's size but it's haphazard (in his/her view) design.

Oh' I see Smile

Just keep in mind....when building you are taking exisiting items and putting them together, so it's what you can buy (spec.)

If your looking for custom then $$ Sad

If your looking naturallllll then look old Smile and some cases cheaper to build.

But...is it to code? and/or allowed? in today's world?

Like someone mentioned you got wood log house. If you got the wood from the land otherwise $$

You got rammed earth, can be timely = $$

You got the earth-ship homes with rammed earth in old tires, may want to check out the youtube for that they have lots' of vid's on it.

You got the sand bag builders, prob. least talked about with the greatest benifits, not only fireproof but water tight.

Got y'r HAY homes, totaly under used, overlooked.

Got the old hole in the ground Smile In-Ground Homes, if you look on the internet you can find many examples that don't look like a hole in the ground...if not mistaken' Bill Gates have the biggest one...in the mountain side.

I think using a combination of the above is the trick, but that's me Smile

McMansions are not custom designed at the owners' request.
McMansions are large, pre-designed homes they put on the menu.

Do you want fries with that?
