Role of Load-Bearing technology in Vernacular Architecture

Can you please express your views, knowledge on the role of load-bearing building technology with regards to vernacular architecture?

I believe everything had to be tied down with rope in the days before Isaac Newton invented gravity

And after gravity was invented, vernacular buildings were always heavier than the other kind, and had to bear a greater portion of the weight of society's burden.

Yes they must have had to tie the elements of the structure. And true that structures with load-bearing tech. would have become much heavier, as something to rest and stand the climate needs to be heavy enough (like not be blown off by the wind). Hm.
But don't you think that with load-bearing tech. the structures got stronger than earlier? And that bigger structures could be built? (like castles) But I need to learn of vernacular housing and not sure whether castles and alike could be counted in that :)
So considering basic public housing structures, did the load-bearing building tech. help much? (in what ways?)
