I think it is important to preserve many of the available remnants of our historical built environment. I've never been to Hastings though.

Has anyone been there? What do you think of this old Victorian pleasure pier and its preservation?

There's a growing trend for Brits to holiday in the UK whilst finances are tight during the recession. Maybe this will lead to some much needed investment in our coastal resorts.

Mind you, the old pier at Weston-super-mare (which I can almost see from my office window) had hundreds of thousands of GBP pumped into it, only for it to go immediately up in flames last summer. We could see the massive mushroom plume of smoke rising ominously above southwest England!!
